Young Musicians hit the high note

A beautiful warm and enlivening afternoon of music was held in Keighley Parish Church, St Andrews on Sat. 1st Nov. Budding musicians as young as 8 displayed their talents to an impressed audience and judging panel in the first round of the Young Musician Competition hosted by the Rotary Club of Keighley and the Worth Valley and the Rotary Club of Skipton.

Announcing the winners the judges Emily Overend and Natalie Kershaw gave each contestant detailed feedback. They said that the competitors had made their job very difficult and they were impressed with the talent on display.

The winners (all pictured below) were:-

Junior Competition

Junior Instrumentalist – Hillary Yi Xuan Zhang

Junior Vocalist – Arrietty Waddington

Intermediate Competition

Intermediate Instrumentalist – Alexander Clarke

Intermediate and overall  Singer  – Matilda Hitchcock

Senior Competition

Senior and overall Instrumentalist – Yuki Chen

Senior Vocalist – Ava-Mai Walton

Each performer received a certificate of participation from the Rotary District Governor Anne Sutcliffe.

Yuki Chen and Matilda Hitchcock were also chosen as overall winners to represent Keighley and Skipton Rotary in the next stage of the competition.

The competition aims to offer young people the experience of performing on a public stage and an opportunity to showcase their musical talent and receive valuable feedback.

Rotary Club of Keighley President Liz Joyce commented  “We have had a beautiful, warm and lively afternoon of music courtesy of our Young talented Musicians. This competition is designed to encourage participation and encourage and foster local young talent. I want to wish Yuki Chen and Matilda Hitchcock all the best in the next stage of this competition.”

In recognition of the contribution made by Emily Overend for the past number of years to the success of the Young Musician Competition a Paul Harris Award was awarded to her by District Governor Anne Sutcliffe.
